Celebrating innovative research: three UCL economists awarded Stone Centre grants

Introducing our latest grant recipients

The James M. and Cathleen D. Stone Centre on Wealth Concentration, Inequality and the Economy at UCL has awarded internal research support grants to three academics from the UCL Department of Economics. These grants recognise exciting new projects that align with the Stone Centre’s mission to deepen our understanding of economic inequality.

Our 2025/2026 grant recipients

• Pedro Carneiro for Long-Term Distributional Consequences of Public Provision of Daycare on Children and Their Families

• Valérie Lechene for Sharing of Time and Expenditure in Households

• Sun Liyang for Robust Instrumental Variable Analysis for Inequality

Each of these projects exemplifies the type of work the Stone Centre seeks to support. The research addresses important questions about the causes and consequences of inequality from diverse perspectives.

About the Stone Centre’s internal research support grants

The Stone Centre’s internal research support grants provide funding of up to £25,000 to faculty members in the UCL Department of Economics to kick-start new initiatives and expand their research agendas. Running since the 2022/2023 academic year, the scheme has become a valuable driver of cutting-edge research that contributes to the Stone Centre’s broader mission to inform academic debate, influence policy discussions, and enrich our collective understanding of economic inequality.

Congratulations and welcome

Congratulations to all on their successful awards, and a warm welcome to the Stone Centre to Valérie and Sun. We also welcome back Pedro, who was successfully awarded a grant in the 2024–25 academic year.
