The Stone Centre at UCL welcomes the 2025/2026 Stone PhD Scholars

A warm welcome to the 2025/2026 Stone PhD Scholars

Four PhD students from the UCL Department of Economics have been appointed Stone PhD Scholars for the 2025/2026 academic year:

Clara von Bismark-Osten, who examines the role of taxation in labour market inequalities. Learn about Clara and Matthew's research on UK public sector pay here.

Ararat Gocmen, who studies the effects of immigration on the hiring and investment decisions of firms, as well as the implications of growing private capital markets for income and wealth inequality

Matthew Nibloe, whose work examines the role of public sector pay policy in shaping inequality and public service provision. Learn about Matthew and Clara's research on UK public sector pay here.

Elena Casanovas, whose research investigates how firm dynamics and growth strategies shape market concentration, labour outcomes, and inequality.

The Stone PhD Scholarship scheme supports researchers in the early stages of their careers by providing them with academic and financial support for their studies. The Stone PhD Scholars can benefit from the mentorship of the Stone Centre's Co-directors, and from that of the Centre's wider network of Visiting Fellows and Affiliates. This is one way in which the Stone Centre is delivering on its mission to advance the research on, and teaching of wealth concentration and inequality.

The Stone PhD Scholarship scheme is made possible by a matching contribution by UCL.
